What is ESG recruitment?

Environmental, Social, and Governance, or ‘ESG’ for short. Three little letters that have come to mean so much when evaluating the performance of modern businesses.

In the not-too-distant past, ESG was little more than a buzzword really, casually mentioned here and there when companies wanted to tick the sustainability box. But as pressure has grown — from investors, regulators, customers, and employees — for companies to operate more responsibly and transparently, ESG has moved way beyond buzzword territory to become a strategic imperative.

Today it shapes business models, guides investment decisions, and has a significant influence over long-term growth and resilience. But how do companies ‘do’ ESG? How does it work?

Well unfortunately, ESG is a complex and ever-changing beast! And to tame it, companies need to find all the right experts to help them. This is where ESG recruitment comes in.

But before we get into exploring what ESG recruitment is all about, maybe we should take a step back, and remind ourselves what the term ESG itself really means.

What is ESG?

ESG, at its core, is simply a set of criteria used to evaluate a company’s impact beyond just its financial performance. The environmental covers the company’s impacts on the planet, the social looks at how the company interacts with people, and the governance focuses on how the company is run.

All together, these three pillars help to paint a comprehensive picture of a company’s sustainability and ethical performance. Investors can then use this ESG criteria to assess the long-term sustainability and ethical impact of a company. Employees and customers can use it to judge whether a company aligns with their values. And regulators are increasingly requiring ESG-related disclosures to ensure transparency. (Who knew three little letters could make such a difference!?).

As key stakeholders come to prioritize ESG more and more, companies are following suit by prioritizing ways to excel in all three areas.

Usually, achieving this requires a lot of very specific ‘know-how’.

So, what is ESG recruitment? And why is it important?

Know how to find that ‘know-how’? ESG recruitment, that’s how!

ESG recruitment, in a nutshell, is the process of hiring professionals with the skills and experience to lead or support an organisation’s ESG initiatives.

Hiring for ESG roles means bringing in people to develop sustainability strategies, navigate complex reporting frameworks, ensure compliance, and lead meaningful change across operations.

And with the pressure companies are under today to embrace ESG principles, getting ESG recruitment right really can be the difference between staying ahead of the curve, or getting left behind.

By finding the right people to build strong ESG capabilities, companies can enhance their brand reputation, appeal to socially conscious stakeholders, and ultimately, foster long-term business value and resilience.

But ESG isn’t just some ‘one-size-fits-all’ role. For ESG recruitment to really be effective, companies will often need to hire for a range of specialized positions. Because tackling ESG properly means covering a whole lot of (hopefully soon to be sustainable!) ground.

Types of ESG roles

As we mentioned, ESG is something that’s always changing. New regulations and perspectives come along, standards and expectations evolve, and along with these changes, whole new ESG-related roles tend to appear.

But below, we’ve taken a look at some of the most common ESG roles companies should look to fill today:

  • ESG analysts: Experts dedicated to analyzing data related to environmental, social, and governance factors, helping companies to identify related risks and opportunities, and aiding in decision-making and business strategy.
  • Sustainability managers: These are professionals who oversee and implement sustainability strategies, track progress, and ensure alignment with business goals. There are many different types of sustainability managers a company can choose to hire, but overall, they help to integrate sustainability into daily operations across departments.
  • Sustainable supply chain managers: You may have guessed this one! These managers focus solely on ensuring that a company’s supply chain is ethical, responsible, and transparent.
  • Energy managers: Companies can hire energy managers to develop and implement strategies to reduce energy consumption, integrate renewable energy, and optimize efficiency, helping to lower costs and carbon footprints.
  • Environmental compliance officers: With a specific focus on regulatory compliance, these experts help to ensure that businesses comply with any relevant environmental regulations.
  • Sustainable product development specialists: Successfully complying with environmental regulations can often involve designing sustainable products, and there’s an expert for that too. Sustainable product development specialists work on designing products that are environmentally friendly, ensuring sustainability is integrated throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Sustainability communications specialists: Stakeholders can’t be impressed by a company’s ESG initiatives if they don’t know about them! To make sure they do, companies can hire sustainability communications specialists to get the word out to the right audiences effectively.
  • CSR managers: CSR managers work on developing corporate social responsibility programs that benefit communities and enhance the company’s social impact, helping them to align with societal goals.
  • Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) managers: D&I Managers are also very focused on the social side of ESG, and they are critical for promoting diversity and equity within organizations. To do this, they develop strategies to ensure fair treatment, inclusivity, and social responsibility.

Now we know that reading through all these roles might be quite overwhelming. You might be thinking, how the heck are we supposed to get our ESG recruitment right when there’s so many roles to fill?
