EcoVadis support: accredited partner, boutique consultancy or independent consultant?

4min

If your customers are asking for an EcoVadis scorecard and your score is not where it needs to be, the first question is usually not what to fix. It is who to bring in. The market offers 3 routes and they differ more than the websites suggest.

This article compares them honestly, including where our own model is the wrong choice.

The 3 routes

EcoVadis Accredited Consulting Partners

EcoVadis maintains an official partner directory. Accredited partners have their own EcoVadis scorecard of 50 or higher and have put a set number of consultants through EcoVadis’ own e-learning. Large assurance and certification firms are well represented here, including Bureau Veritas, SGS and Mannaz.

Where they fit best. You want the reassurance of an organisation that EcoVadis itself has vetted, you are a large supplier under scrutiny from procurement teams, or your buyer explicitly asks who is advising you.

The trade-offs. Accreditation is granted to the organisation, not necessarily to the person who shows up. Ask who will actually do the work and whether that individual completed the EcoVadis training. Rates at the larger firms sit at the top of the market, and their availability follows their own assessment calendar rather than your submission deadline.

Boutique sustainability consultancies

Smaller firms that offer EcoVadis support alongside broader ESG work. Bioregional, Litmus Sustainability, Antaris and Energise are examples in this segment.

Where they fit best. You want senior attention on a mid-sized engagement and a single team that also understands the sustainability work behind the scorecard, not only the questionnaire.

The trade-offs. Capacity is the constraint. A firm with a handful of EcoVadis specialists can only run so many assessments per cycle, and every client has the same deadline. Depth on EcoVadis specifically also varies: for some it is a core service, for others an add-on.

Independent specialist consultants

You engage an individual specialist for a defined scope, either by finding them yourself or through a curated network like ours or Leafr.

Where they fit best. You have someone internally who can own the process and you need to add expertise, not management. You want the person you assessed to be the person doing the work. You want the knowledge to stay in your team so next year’s reassessment is easier.

The trade-offs, and this matters. An independent consultant delivers their scope. They will not chase your procurement colleague for supplier data unless you ask them to, and they are not accountable for your internal coordination. If nobody on your side can own the process, a consultancy that takes full responsibility is the better choice. Sourcing independently also means you handle vetting, contracting and cross-border compliance yourself, which is the problem platforms exist to solve.

3 questions that decide it

Who owns the assessment internally? Evidence for EcoVadis sits across departments. Procurement holds supplier data, HR holds labour and human rights, and policies usually live somewhere else again. Somebody has to pull that together. If that person exists, buy expertise. If not, buy ownership.

What do you want to be left with? A better score this cycle, or a team that can run the next assessment without external help? Independent consultants are consistently stronger on the second, because the working knowledge stays inside your organisation.

How hard is your deadline? If your reassessment window is weeks away, availability beats every other criterion. That is the one case where the fastest route wins regardless.

Where Dazzle fits

We are the third route. We match companies with independent EcoVadis specialists, usually within 48 hours, on a project or interim basis. Our consultants include former EcoVadis employees and specialists who ran assessments at EcoVadis accredited consulting partners, so they know how each answer is scored. We handle vetting, contracting and compliance so you work with 1 supplier and 1 invoice.

To be precise about something the market often blurs: Dazzle is not currently listed as an EcoVadis Accredited Consulting Partner. The hands-on assessment experience sits with the individual consultants in our network. If your buyer requires an organisation from the official directory, we are not your route, and we will tell you that in the first call.

We have run 63 EcoVadis engagements for 23 companies since January 2024. Dazzle clients include Ansell, Spring GDS, TKH Group, VMI Group and RGF Staffing. Dazzle client Kolmar Group, a global trader in petrochemicals, oil products and biofuels, has worked with consultant Viktoria Vero across 5 EcoVadis projects covering assessment review, implementation support and a KPI dashboard.

If you want to talk through which route suits your situation, our team is happy to think it through with you, including when the answer is not us.
